Phits Orthoses

Phits represent the most advanced form of custom orthotic technology currently available in clinical podiatry. Manufactured using three-dimensional printing from precise, data-driven gait analysis, Phits orthotics are uniquely fabricated for each individual patient, delivering a level of biomechanical accuracy that prefabricated insoles and traditional cast-based custom orthotics cannot match. At West Bridgford Podiatry, Phits are prescribed by Hassan Ebrahim Isat following comprehensive computerised gait analysis using the RSscan Footscan system, ensuring that every device is built on accurate, objective clinical data specific to the way you move.

Phits Orthoses

Phits, which stands for Personalised High-Tech Insoles, are advanced 3D-printed orthotic insoles developed by RSscan International in collaboration with Materialise, a global leader in additive manufacturing. They are fabricated using selective laser sintering (powder bed fusion) technology, which builds the insole layer by layer from a medical-grade nylon powder. The result is a precise lattice structure in which different zones of the insole have individually calculated densities and flexibility profiles, providing targeted support where your foot needs it most and preserving natural movement where it does not.

This zone-specific approach is only possible because the Phits prescription is derived from your individual Footscan gait data, rather than from a static impression of the foot.

Phits orthotics are clinically indicated for a range of conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis and chronic heel pain
  • High arches (pes cavus) and flat feet (pes planus)
  • Ball of the foot pain (metatarsalgia)
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Tibialis posterior tendinitis and progressive flat foot deformity
  • Knee pain, hip pain, and lower back pain linked to gait mechanics
  • Sports injuries in runners, cyclists, and other athletes
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Hallux valgus (bunions)
  • Ankle pain associated with gait dysfunction

Receiving Phits orthotics at West Bridgford Podiatry involves the following stages:

  • Biomechanical Assessment: A thorough evaluation of your lower limb structure, joint range of motion, and muscle function, establishing the clinical picture before any prescription is made.
  • Footscan Gait Analysis: You walk across our RSscan Footscan pressure plate, which captures over 4,000 data points per second to produce a detailed map of how your feet function during walking. This dynamic data is the foundation on which your Phits are designed.
  • Data Submission and Fabrication: Your gait scan data and clinical measurements are submitted to the Phits manufacturing system. Using this information, a bespoke lattice structure is designed and 3D-printed from medical-grade nylon specifically for your feet.
  • Fitting Appointment: Once your Phits arrive at the clinic, you attend a fitting session to ensure they are comfortable and correctly positioned within your footwear. Your podiatrist will provide guidance on wearing them gradually.

Phits orthotics are designed to last for two years. The top covers, the surface layer of the insole that contacts your foot directly, are user-replaceable without returning the device to the clinic, making them more cost-effective to maintain over time than traditional custom orthotics requiring laboratory refurbishment.

Phits are developed in close collaboration with podiatrists and sports medicine clinicians, informed by the extensive biomechanical dataset collected by RSscan International through the Footscan platform. The prescription process at West Bridgford Podiatry follows HCPC standards and the guidance of the College of Podiatry.

Phits orthotics are particularly well suited to:

  • Athletes and active individuals requiring orthotics compatible with high-performance footwear
  • Patients with complex biomechanical presentations requiring the highest level of precision
  • Those who have tried prefabricated orthotics without achieving adequate relief
  • Patients seeking a long-lasting, data-driven custom orthotic solution

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Phits different from regular custom orthotics?

Traditional custom orthotics are made from a static impression of the foot. Phits are designed from dynamic gait data captured whilst you walk, meaning the orthotic is built around how your foot actually functions in motion rather than a snapshot of its resting position.

Lead times vary depending on the production schedule. Your clinician will advise of the expected wait at the time of prescription.

Yes. The slim lattice structure makes Phits particularly compatible with sports footwear including running shoes, cycling shoes, and football boots. Your clinician will confirm compatibility with your specific footwear at your assessment.

A short adaptation period is normal for any new orthotic. Your clinician will advise on a gradual wear-in programme so your body can adjust comfortably over the first few weeks of use.

Yes. Phits Replacement covers can be ordered through West Bridgford Podiatry.
